Matplotlib Intro 📊
Data Visualization in Python
Matplotlib is the "grandfather" of Python visualization libraries. It was created by John Hunter in 2003 to replicate MatLab's plotting capabilities in Python. It gives you complete control over every aspect of a figure.
🎨 Analogy: The Artist's Canvas
Think of Matplotlib as painting on a Canvas.
- Figure: The entire blank canvas or piece of paper.
- Axes: The specific area where you draw a chart (you can have multiple charts on one canvas).
- Axis: The x and y rulers that define the scale.
✨ Installation
Install it using PIP:
pip install matplotlib
📥 Importing
The standard import convention is:
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np
print(matplotlib.__version__)🎯 Real-World Application: Stock Market
Financial analysts use Matplotlib to visualize stock price trends over time to make investment decisions.
🏗️ Architecture
Matplotlib has three layers:
- Backend Layer: Handles the rendering (drawing) to the screen or file.
- Artist Layer: Handles the internal objects (Figure, Axes, Axis, Text).
- Scripting Layer (Pyplot): The high-level interface we use to create plots easily.
💡 Alternatives
While Matplotlib is powerful, other libraries like Seaborn (built on top of Matplotlib) and Plotly (interactive) are also popular for specific use cases.
